Hidden Images in Van Gogh's Art

The following is just a small selection of the multitude of Vincent’s paintings which display Hidden Images and Writing. It will familiarize the viewer with the creative genius which dominated Van Gogh’s life.
Vincent was driven by intense passion due to his religious training. He grew up with a Calvinist Minister as his father and had ambitions to become a Minister himself.

In 1876 Vincent was hired to teach religion as a lay preacher at a school in Ramsgate, and then in Isleworth, both towns located in England . He was conversant in the English language as he lived previously in England in the capacity of an Art Dealer employed for “Goupil”.

In spring 1877, Vincent went to stay with his Uncle Johan in Amsterdam , where he prepared for theology studies by tackling Latin and Greek. His restlessness caused him to break up his studies early. Thereafter he taught religion at the Borinage an impoverished Belgian mining district.

Vincent Van Gogh was well known as a religious zealot and his paintings suggest clear evidence that good and evil were his constant companions.

"Mountains at St. Remy with Dark Cottage". July 1889
The above painting depicts the mountains at St.Remy, France, but this painting was painted at a time when Van Gogh became fascinated with Japan, it's art and it's religion. In this painting you will find the head of a dragon,
a Shinto priest and the word Shintoism. For Illustration purposes we used the head of the Luck Dragon From the Movie "The Neverending Story". Below you will see a close up of the word Shintoism.

"The Dance Hall in Arles", Dec 1888

The thick black hair of the Arlesian women always reminded Vincent of the
Japanese women. The yellow balls in the gallery portray the symbol of the
"Rising Sun" in Japan, therefore the hidden writing “Japan”.

Adversities of “Good and Evil” were constant companions of torment in Van Gogh’s mind. He always thought of himself as the “Lamb of God”. This fact prompted him to hide images of the “Lamb and Beast” in his paintings. The relentless fight between “Good and Evil” exudes from his paintings.
The expression of his innermost feelings at the time of the construction of his paintings is projected through the hidden images.

"Wheat Field with Crows", July 1890

Above is the last known painting by Van Gogh. He painted it shortly before he shot himself. The hidden images totally reflect his melancholy feelings. The “Ram” (male Lamb) is dying. Notice the only crow which flies upside down makes up the closed eye of the Lamb. The “Lamb” is perishing, one of its paws still stretching upwards.
The rest of its body is sinking below the horizon.
The “Snake “ in the foreground is surviving alive and well.

" Green Wheat Field", June 1889 ,with hidden Lamb and Beast.

"Wheat Field with Rain" , Nov. 1889.
Here we see the Screaming Lamb.

"Corner of Voyer D' Argenson Park at Asnières", Paris, 1887.

Van Gogh's recurring theme, Lamb and Beast (a wolf).

For the following paintings it is important to note that Vincent was proficient in English,
because he taught for a while, as a lay preacher, at Ramsgate and Isleworth, England.

 March 1888

“Pink Peach Tree in Blossom” entitled “Souvenir de Mauve” which translates into “Reminiscence of Mauve”
There are 2 versions of the Peach Tree. This one is dedicated to the painter Anton Mauve. It has the hidden images of a lamb and a cat. The cat is clawing the head of the lamb. There is also hidden writing “ US Fusing” indicating that the cat ( Mauve) is merging with the mind of the lamb (Van Gogh).

The hidden writing " US Fusing" the Lamb(Van Gogh) is merging minds with the
cat ( Mauve).   The two frames on the right will allow you to see the details.

"Apricot Tree in Blossom", April 1888.
The depiction of the Feet of Crucifixion and the Snake.

This painting has a triple image: the upside down dying lamb, and the snake.

Here we have one of several of Van Gogh's copies of his Impressionist peers.
This one is " The Pietà , after Delacroix". Saint Remy,1889. this was made in two versions, seen here.
Only one of them has the hidden images of a Vulture attacking the Lamb.

The painting " Noon: Rest from Work (after Millet)" Jan 1890.

The old adage "Sleeping like an Angel" is used in this painting. The Farmers are resting against
the hidden image of a big lamb. Resting against the woman is an angel, that resembles the
one from the Japanese Cherry tree.

"Entrance to a Quarry" St Remy, Mid-July 1889.

In this painting Vincent represents the healing of a blind man. The head is noticable
through the chin, lips, and nose, and the hand of the healer touching the area of the eyes.

Each “Self Portrait” has an image of a Lamb either on the right or left hand side of his face. The expression of the Lamb is portraying Van Gogh’s state of mind at the time the picture was painted, there are various expressions: A Lamb appearing calm to a Lamb which is screaming. In reality, of course, lambs do not scream. These character portrayals of lambs are a figment of Van Gogh’s imagination.

The paintings below are a very small selection of his Self-Portraits.

    June 1890

The hidden writing “ Judgement Day”.------ Vincent and Dr. Gachet were not always in agreement with the medical treatments Dr. Gachet used. Dr. Gachet in this painting is holding the plant “Foxglove” out of which “Digitalis” the Medicine is derived. Digitalis in the hands of an experienced physician is good medicine, but in the hands of a charlatan it is a poison, therefore the hidden writing “Judgement Day”
Note: Judgement is the true English spelling of the Americanized Judgment.

Again Van Gogh has made copies of his works with some differences between them.

In this painting titled " Thatched Cottages in Jorgus", June 1890. The Beast of the Apocalypse is devouring everything
in his path, therefore the hidden writing "En-Ding". The “En” before the dash is written in mirrored
writing, just the way Leonardo da Vinci used mirrored script.

In this painting , known as "A Woman Walking in the Garden", Paris June-July 1887,
we can see a robed pilgrim, similar to the one visible in the Japanese Cherry Tree.

One of Van Gogh's most famous pieces, Starry Night. St. Remy, June 1889

Revelations Chapter 6:12-13. Lamb (Jesus) holds the scroll in his hand.
The scroll has seven seals predicting the earth calamities. " the moon became like blood. Stars of heaven
fell to the earth". In the final frame of the animation ,the painting has been lightened to enhance the
visibility.

In this other version of Starry Night , "Starry Night over the Rhone" Sept 1888
The hidden images depict the Gate to Heaven and there are two coffins
in front of it.

More hidden images have been recently discovered:

Starry night over Rhone demons

To the left side of the 2 demons, there is a depiction of a narrow gate which looks like a door.
A man's hand is reaching over the gate attempting to open it. On the gate there is the writing
of 3 letters "MAT", below it slightly to the left is a Roman Numeral " VII ". I consulted the Bible.
"MAT" stands for the Book of Matthew, " VII " stands for chapter # 7.

Chapter # 7, verse 13 states: "Go in through the narrow gate and chose "Life", the narrow gate
is hard to find. The gate to "Hell" is wide, the road leading to it easy to find".

"Field with Church and Dark Figures", also known as "Landscape with Church and Farms",
also known as "Brabant Landscape" , April 1885.

The painting above is of a field in Brabant. There are several hidden images here. The two lower images are
magnified to improve the visibility.

The outline of the smiling pilgrim.

An image of "Crowned Madonna and Child", and an angel.
The angel is standing on the right hand side of the baby Christ, opposite of the
lion facing the baby in the image below.

The Lion on the left of the Madonna is touching the baby's face.
The Lion symbolizes the "House of David" which Christ is a
descendant of.

.
Nativity King and Demon : there is the image of a man with dark skin, big red lips, eyes
outlined in black, wearing a white turban. He is the first of the three Kings present at
the "Nativity Scene".
Beneath the King is the presence of a demon. He is depicted with horns, large ears,
smirking, turning away from the "Virgin"

Nativity King and Horse : Depicts a black man with big eyes. The whites of the eyes are very
prominent, enhanced with dark pupils. The loop of the "W" is becoming his mustache, the head
of the "Virgin" is part of the turban.
You can see the outline of an Arabian horse, indicating that the man is an Arab. This would be
the second King of the "Nativity Scene".

Here we can see the third King of the Nativity Scene.

Also, in this corner we can see the word "Japan".

Sien, a prostitute, was Vincent's live-in girlfriend,
he also made several sketches of her. The image has been rotated
to put the writing level.

Here we see the name Johan. Vincent spent a happy year living in Amsterdam
with Uncle Johan the Admiral.

Here we can see a man's head which appears be a self portrait of
Van Gogh. See the Brabant Landscape painting for a similar image.

The Monk.

1885, the Year of the painting?

This is another rendering of the year 1885.

The signature of "Vincent" is monogrammed with an inverted and backwards "G".
Van Gogh has used similar monogrammed signatures in two of his other known
paintings. The " W " on the right side of Vincent stands for the first letter of his
middle name, Willem.
The small sign before the year 85 which looks like a cross means "fait". This is
French which translates as "made", thus this painting was made in 1885.
